Some professional burglars prefer to victimize commercial property as opposed to private homes because when it is a store, they know the inside of it and exactly how to get around it/ where everything is. This makes the act much simpler. This also gives them an idea of exactly how much the merchandise is worth from price tags, so they know how much they can resell for. The burglars also have a chance to see if or what kind of security system there is in the store. Some reasons why a burglar would hit the same target more that once are : it takes less effort to break into a home that you already know around and know it is easy to do and escape routes are well known. They know what items are in the place that they can steal that they might not have been able to take the first time. Some techniques that burglars generally use to best accomplish the breaking and enter are things such as learning the many skills needed to commit the crimes, such a gaining entry into the place, selecting the best targets, taking the best items for resale, obtaining the proper equipment needed. Another is being able to form a team/ criminal gang with trustworthy companions for a successful job. They must have the right information of what awaits them inside the building. And lastly they must have buyers for the stolen merchandise that they know are reliable to get rid of it. They must know how to successfully gain profit.

Auto theft is actually among the highest in the world for Canada. People steal cars mainly to sell the parts to make a profit. The top 5 cities with the highest rates for auto theft are as listed: Regina, Abbotsford, Winnipeg, Kelowna and Brentford. The top 5 vehicles typically stolen are: Toyota Venza, Honda Civic, Ford F350, Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Trailblazer. The best ways to protect yourself from having your vehicle stolen are to never leave your car unlocked. It doesn't matter if you are leaving it for only even a few minutes, always keep your doors locked. Also never leave your keys unattended in the ignition. If you leave your keys in the ignition you are basically giving your vehicle away. Never leave valuables in visible sight in your car. If you have a laptop, cell phone, new electronics or anything expensive and worth stealing, put it away in your truck, or smaller things in glove box, somewhere hidden. It is best to not leave valuables in your car at all. It is best to keep your insurance and personal information on you rather than in your glove box or anywhere in your vehicle because these documents make it much harder to track. Lastly, it is a very good idea to get a electronic immobilizer installed in your car. All cars made after 2007 legally have them in them, but it is very safe to get one installed if your car does not.
Sexual behavior can and is socialized into male behavior constantly. Media has a huge impact on this and is mostly to blame. Men are taught and shown to behave very masculine and to have (or act like they have) a lot of sexual experience. I do think that in some cases sexual assaults are committed by 'hypermasculine' males, but that is not always the case since there are different types of sexual assault offenders. Those males who sexually assault women for the enjoyment of power and for their sexual needs are likely hypermasculine.

This article talks about two incidents of rape at a party. For the accusations against Mr Barnett, from the information in the article, I do not believe at all that his intention was to rape Ms. Coleman. He claims that it was consensual and its a tough call to say what really happened when both people were drunk. The fact that Ms. Coleman changed her story several times is concerning. It does not appear that he meant to sexually assault her and I do not feel he had motive when he had no intention of this. The younger boy who was accused of raping a 13 year old girl also, while he did admit that she did not consent, I still feel that he was not possessing the typical rapist traits. He did not do it for the thrill of power or fear, it seems to me that it was just sexual temptation and alcohol being the main negative factor.

Clifford Olsen was a serial killer convicted of 13 murders, all of which were children. He would drive around Vancouver picking up his victims, who were usually runaways, then offer them a job and basically a good life, then sexually assault them and murder them. He is so well known because he got away with it for so long. Once caught, he told the police he would tell them where all the bodies were if they paid him $100,000. The police did go along with this, and they did come up with the bodies, but this caused a lot of controversy because the public did not agree with someone benefiting from committing crime.
Marc Lepine was a mass murdered, he was behind the 1989 Monreal massacre of 28 women at Ecole Polytechnique. He entered the university with a rifle and a knife and walked into room 230, sternly asking the men in the room to leave. Lepine shouted at these women and out of anger shot at them all, leaving six dead. He continued through the school relentlessly shooting all the women he could. One woman was stabbed through her heart several times. Once the fire alarm was set off the gunman put the rifle to his head and shot himself. Marc Lepine's reason behind this mass murder was his issues with feminism. He thought that women getting an education was wrong because they were taking the jobs of men.
I do not think that there is a possibility of us completely stopping people like this. Sometimes he signs in people do not show til later in life or sometimes they do not seem concerning. Of course we know that, for example, someone who commits pety crimes repeatedly throughout their teenage years is much more likely to move onto more intense crimes but it would be ridiculous and nearly impossible with the resources we have to moniter these people with the tell tale warnings like committing petty crimes or having a bad home life for example. Sometimes the signs do not show until later in a persons life so it can be hard to know who will do these horrid things. It is unrealistic to think that we can stop crime completely.

There are many short term and long term impacts that victims of crime suffer. The short term effects that Harper suffered from would be her fear, which resulted in her not getting sleep and various other things. Because she was not getting sleep, she got fired from her job as she couldn't function properly. She always had the lights on at night, which caused a strain on her relationship and ended up losing her boyfriend from her complete change in personality and routine. She could not have a healthy relationship with her boyfriend. She was barely eating and was always afraid. She had to relive the experience over and over from having to give her statement to the police and her memories. Harper would sleep with her running shoes at at night as well. She cut her hair and moved away, her lifestyle was definitely changed in a major way.
The long term affects that Harper suffered would be her trust issues and personality changes. She was very guarded and didn't let people in. She acted like she didn't care about anything and as if she was completely moved on from what happened to her when really it is something you never truly can get over. She felt like since nothing could change what happened to her that she has no obligation to help other people by identifying her offender.

This article is about a man who was robbed and had his life threatened. He was tied up but managed to get away safely, the perpetrators were never caught. The effects this must have had on his life are terrible. He must be afraid to invite anyone back to his house. Maybe scared they will return to his house. They did threaten his life so I imagine he is worried about his safety. The fact that they haven't been caught must make him very scared that they will come back and kill him thinking he has enough information about them to get them caught.
I feel as if the government has set very good protocols that victims must go through after an incident, like the counselling and the change of locks payed for by the goverment for rape victims. I'm not sure what else we can do to make the impact less, as we cant stop crime from happening completely and we already have help offered to victims.

Mr. Young has asked our class why drug crime rates are increasing in British Columbia. I think that there isn't one main reason, as it will be different for different parts of the province. I feel like the reason drug crimes are increasing so much in bigger cities such as Vancouver and areas surrounding is because there is a lot of money in big cities and it is easy to get a hold of drugs like cocaine. People have money to buy expensive drugs and in bigger cities there is more dealers, as the population is high. Also, since it is such an addictive drug the drug business keeps going. Also in bigger cities, while there is a lot more police force, it is very crowded and can be easier to not get caught when there is so many other things going on. Along with the hard drugs going around, it would also be very easy to obtain marijuana as well because where there is hard drugs there is usually other drugs close around. Then there are the smaller cities. I think that in small towns, the rate of drugs like cocaine would be a lot less than drugs like marijuana. Kids get bored easily in small towns with nothing better to do and it is easy to get in a situation where you are trying drugs like marijuana. It can easily become a pass time.
Another reason drug crime rates could be so high is that the amount of youth with drug charges has been increasing and charges get dropped more often from minors for drug offences. Getting caught and no trouble coming of it could easily lead to them to continue to commit these crimes throughout their lives. Then once they get caught as an adult the charges don't get dropped, and are counted in statistics. This could be a reason behind drug crime rates increasing.
